Statewide Research Competition 2011-2012

The South Carolina Water Resources Center would like to announce its request for proposals for its annual Statewide Research Competition. Researchers that are conducting research on water resource problems relevant to South Carolina should consider applying. This year we are especially interested in research targeted towards the Savannah River Basin.  However, any researchers studying issues of water quality, water management, water quantity, or aquatic and environmental protection in the state should consider applying.

Reflections on the 2011 NIWR Annual Meeting

In February of 2011, representatives from the South Carolina Water Resources Center (SC WRC) had the opportunity to attend the annual meeting for the National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR). This year’s meeting was held from February 14th to the 16th, at the Liaison Hotel in Washington D.C. Although the SC WRC regularly attends the NIWR annual meeting, the center was honored to have the opportunity to oversee the planning process for this year’s meeting. Led by Dr. Jeff Allen, who has served as NIWR’s President-Elect for 2010/2011, graduate students Anna Eskridge, Katie Maroney, and Laila Johnson, worked hard to ensure that the meeting would be a success.

Water Center Graduate Assistant interning with Upstate Forever for Summer 2011

This summer, SC WRC Graduate Research Assistant Anna Eskridge is working with Upstate Forever, an environmental non-profit located in the upstate of South Carolina.  Ms. Eskridge is working on a collaborative project between SC WRC and Upstate Forever.  The project is a feasibility study that assesses South Carolina’s current water laws and regulations as well as the state’s water rights regime to see what kind of framework is needed to facilitate water quantity trading efforts in the state. Ms. Eskridge is working alongside John Tynan, the Co-Director of Clean Air & Water Program at Upstate Forever.  Dr. Jeffery S. Allen is serving as the principal investigator for the project.
